Avanço das Monoculturas e Desmatamento no Oeste Catarinense: Mapeamento das Alterações no Uso da Terra em Xanxerê com o Uso da História Digital (1979-2018)

Abstract

The main objective of this article is to discuss historical factors that relate the advance of monocultures and the decrease in forest areas in the region of Xanxerê, state of Santa Catarina, between 1979 and 2018. From this perspective, we initially address the history of Brazilian agrarian expansionism, with emphasis on the development of southern Brazil and, consequently, focusing on western Santa Catarina. In this sense, we will approach the region of the Municipality of Xanxerê with the help of existing bibliography, adding information obtained in one of Incra's reports. In addition to data from institutions such as the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the Association of Credit and Rural Assistance of Santa Catarina (ACARESC) and the Brazilian Agricultural Research Company (EMBRAPA). The use of new technologies that help map the agrarian expansionism will also be evaluated, outlining a scenario of gradual expansion in the size of crops and, consequently, its reflection in the alteration of the local landscape.
