The Influence of Media and Society in the Pursuit of the Perfect Body
Abstract
Introduction: Aesthetic pressure and socially imposed beauty standards drive the pursuit of body modifications. Media and social influence generate dissatisfaction with self-image, leading individuals to seek aesthetic procedures in order to achieve acceptance and social status.Methodology: This is an exploratory and descriptive study with a quantitative approach. The research was conducted with 34 volunteers who had undergone aesthetic procedures within the past two years. Data were collected through an online questionnaire and analyzed using statistical methods. Results: The findings indicated that most participants considered low self-esteem a determining factor in the decision to undergo aesthetic procedures.Discussion: Media and social media influence was identified as a significant element contributing to body dissatisfaction. In addition, the need for acceptance within social groups and the pursuit of professional validation also emerged as motivating factors. Constant comparison with unrealistic aesthetic standards intensifies dissatisfaction with one’s own body, leading to the search for surgical and non-surgical interventions. Conclusion: The study demonstrates that the decision to pursue aesthetic modifications is associated with media influence, social pressures, and self-esteem. The pursuit of the ideal body reinforces aesthetic standards that are often unattainable, thereby impacting mental health.
