Sustainable tourism has emerged as a necessary response to the negative impacts generated by traditional tourism activities, seeking to integrate economic, social, and environmental dimensions in a balanced manner. This article reviews the main theories and models underpinning sustainable tourism, such as the Triple Bottom Line, Stakeholder Theory, and Sustainable Governance. Additionally, it discusses the practical application of these approaches in various tourism typologies, such as ecotourism, community-based tourism, and adventure tourism, highlighting how these practices can mitigate environmental damage, promote local development, and preserve cultures. By considering the relevance of technological innovation, the circular economy, and sustainable tourism education, the article provides a holistic perspective that emphasizes the need for collaboration among all stakeholders to achieve truly sustainable tourism development. It concludes that sustainable tourism, besides being a viable alternative, is a strategic imperative to ensure the well-being of future generations while preserving natural and cultural resources.References
