Avaliação de Sementes de Goiaba como Inibidor Natural em Meio Corrosivo no Aço AISI/SAE 1020

Abstract

The corrosion phenomenon is a natural and inevitable challenge that causes the deterioration of various materials. Industry widely uses carbon steel, a material that demands excellent mechanical properties and high corrosion resistance. This study aimed to investigate the inhibitory action of guava seeds on the corrosion of AISI/SAE 1020 carbon steel in a medium of H2O, NaCl, and HCl 1 mol L-1 at concentrations of 1 g L-¹ of the seed powder. Five steps were carried out in the mass loss test on the corrosion of AISE/SAE 1020 carbon steel in three media, in the presence and absence of the inhibitory action of guava seeds. The steps were: extracting guava seed samples (inhibitor); preparing the test specimens (rectangular plates of AISI/SAE 1020 carbon steel); preparing the three corrosive media (H2O, NaCl, and HCl); testing for loss of mass, exposing the test specimens for 21 days; cleaning to determine the final mass; and calculating the corrosion rate and inhibition efficiency. It was found that the presence of the inhibitor reduced the mass loss of the samples compared to the samples without inhibitor, and that there was a reduction in the corrosion rate of the samples compared to the samples without inhibitor. Regarding the inhibition efficiency, the corrosion inhibitor was more effective in acidic medium, with an efficiency of 59.11% compared to the neutral medium, taking as parameters the results obtained in the gravimetric tests. It is concluded that in the test performed, a reduction in the mass loss and in the corrosion rate of the samples was verified when exposed to solutions of H2O, HCl, and NaCl containing guava seed powder. This indicated that guava seeds, in powder form, have corrosion-inhibiting properties for AISI/SAE 1020 carbon steel.
