Abstract

The Cerrado biome is home to more than 12,000 native plant species, distributed across 11 phytophysiognomies, including grassland, savanna and forest areas. This diversity of environments gives native plants specific functional traits. To investigate these functional traits, a search was carried out in the Web of Science database, which resulted in a total of 1227 publications, of which 482 were retained for analysis after applying filtering criteria. Scientometrics methods were used to obtain publication metrics and content analysis of articles. It was observed that the most frequent functional traits in publications are related to themes such as phenology, photosynthesis, fire occurrence, herbivory, pollination, leaf area, carbon, regrowth capacity, competition, adaptations to drought, plant anatomy and seed dispersal. The number of publications increased during the period analyzed (1991-2022), mainly from 2011 onwards, with at least 20 articles published annually. The basic research themes were Cerrado, climate change, fire ecology and water deficit, the driving themes included subjects mainly related to photosynthesis and climate change. Based on the analyses, it is observed that functional traits can be classified into demographic, phenological, physiological, morphological, morphophenological and morphophysiological. Although this study is comprehensive, it is noteworthy that the number of articles published investigating the functional traits of plants native to the Cerrado is incipient, especially given the rapid changes in land use and cover that occur in the biome and which can significantly affect the flora. More studies are needed to generate knowledge and fill the gaps in relation to the responses and adaptations of plants in the biome to different environmental conditions and limitations, especially in a scenario of climate change, changes in land use, fragmentation of habitats, invasion of natural environments by exotic species and contamination by agrochemicals.
